The World is Listening...Are You Ready?

The Judgement of Solomon and the Chiropractic Baby

Most of you I’m sure are aware of the story of King Solomon and the baby from the Old Testament. It is the tale of two women, both claiming to be the mother of the baby in question, come to King Solomon for his advice on how to settle the matter.

I propose the same question to the field. If you were King Solomon, how would you judge the matter when presented with the “chiropractic baby?”

Now here is the tricky part. You do not have two mothers, but three standing before you. Each claiming an equal right to the baby and some claiming the only right.

The first mother tells you that chiropractic is the detection and correction of vertebral subluxation to allow for the fullest expression of life. She relates that it is separate and distinct from the practice of allopathy and provides legal evidence of such.

The second mother tells you that chiropractic is the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions through the detection and correction of subluxation and other natural interventions. She shows you her diploma from a college that has been in existence almost as long as the profession itself and also the state scope of practice law that provides for all she is doing in her office.

The third and relatively younger woman states that chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession, a part of medicine, and that in addition to manipulations of the skeletal system, chiropractors are trained to diagnosis and treat most human aliments and do so with both natural substances as well as pharmaceutical agents.

So King Solomon, how do you respond?

Do you call for the sword to cut the baby not in half, but in thirds? Do you give three swords to the three and let them continue to battle it out? Or do you consider the principles of freedom and liberty of man to pursue his own desires as long as it does not harm his neighbor?

If you opt for the last solution, the necessary implications of the the third paradigm must be evaluated in regards to liberty. Is this paradigm so far removed from the other two that it harms the value and very existence of the the older women and thus is not the right of this woman to stake claim to the baby?

If you opt to hand out three swords, what guarantee do you have that you will not have the same two or three women standing before you, or perhaps their children or children’s children, bloodied and battered from a battle of beliefs and political/legal entrenchments that have left all depleted of both property and position in the market.

The reality is, we have no King Solomon or Solomons capable of making such a decision. The system is not designed as such, nor is it right for any one person or reigning aristocracy to make such a difficult decision.

Thomas Paine in his Rights of Man stated, “It is only from the nation themselves that reforms can be expected.”

Only the nation will provide the reform necessary to save the baby.

“A LIST OF THIRTY THREE PRINCIPLES, numbered and named.”

The 33 principles have been the subject of much rhetoric but little has been published on the matter since they were first published in 1927.  I am in the process of writing a paper to contribute to the published material on these often enigmatic and emotion generating principles.  One of the most common misconceptions I see out there is that these 33 principles were meant to be some sort of Chiro Bible or “33 commandments of  Chiropractic.”

RW Stephenson in his classic text had this to say, “Chiropractic like other sciences, has many principles. As in other sciences some of these principles are different from the rest; some being more fundamental than others. This fact can be seen by examining the foregoing definitions of principles. Some of the principles are basic, upon which others are founded or derived as going from the general to the specific; some are down to a part of the whole thing. These specific principles are of course derived principles. They are not limited to any given number. A fundamental principle of Chiropractic is a statement of the quality or actions of intelligence in matter which will include any and all circumstances that may arise in study.  Immediately following are a number of principles which have been chosen for discussion in this book. These are stated and numbered for convenience so that their application to things under discussion can be seen. They are arranged in an order which goes from the general to the specific. They are referred to by number in the text, of which each Article is supported by one or more principles, thereby giving the entire work unity and agreement.” After listing the principles, Stephenson goes on to say, “These principles will be used for the concluding work of the Freshman Section of the book. They are discussed in detail in the Senior Section. The discussions are in advance of the Freshman work, but it is advisable to learn their names for reference.”

It is quite clear that he never intended them to be a perfect syllogism or implied that they were complete themselves without proper explanation as set forth in the remainder of the text. When one reads the entire text, the principles make perfect sense and terms that may seem illogical or ill-defined are defined and explained in great detail.  The 33 principles were intended to help teach the frame of reference the Chiropractor must have in order to successfully care for those in he attended to in accordance with natural law and the clinical practice of Chiropractic.  BJ said it best in his Letter of Approval at the beginning of the text “The one great, grand and glorious thing you HAVE done has been to compile the many principles which are in my writings, into a systematic, organized manner, building them up from simple to the higher forms, so that any layman inclined could investigate and find out what CHIROPRACTIC IS, IS NOT; WHAT IT DOES AND DOES NOT; HOW AND WHY IT DOES WHAT IT DOES. YOU have clearly, carefully and consistently compiled the many PRINCIPLES of Chiropractic into a readable, understandable book, simple enuf for the layman, deep enuf for the savant.”

“There are many paradoxes in Chiropractic; its enemies and people who do not know its principles, too readily condemn it as assertions or tenets opposed to common sense. A closer acquaintance with it, however, reveals the absolute truth of its principles.”  In examining Stephenson’s text and becoming aquainted with Chiropractic’s principles, I have yet to find major errors in the logic.  It has made me a better Chiropractor and allowed me to ask better questions I believe we can use to validate the truth of these principles.

“How many Chiropractic Philosophers are dancing on the head of a pin?”

Now I love a great Chiropractic philosophical discussion just as much as anyone. Gladly staying up til 4am to discuss the most intricate details of our beautiful philosophy and ponder ambiguous portions of it. However, lately I have noticed that sometimes we get so caught up in areas of the philosophy that are beyond our current abilities to prove and yet we argue back and forth defending our beliefs about how it may be. The process is never pointless, as it often provides better clarity for one or several parties, however we must be careful not to lose contact with our common goal and vision of taking this philosophy to the world.

“Because BJ said so…”

This is often the extent of Chiropractic philosophy defense by some Chiropractors. It is no wonder those on the opposite side of the fence accuse us of being dogmatic so often. The truth is, that quoting BJ or DD is not a bad thing as long as the person doing so understands the content and the context, and can rationally and logically defend the statement. Before diving into the philosophy and taking Sherman College of Chiropractic’s Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers program, I was guilty of “believing” in Chiropractic more than “knowing” Chiropractic. What do you believe about Chiropractic? Do you believe it is an alternative to medicine? How about a drugless, non-surgical therapy?

Now ask yourself, “What do you know about Chiropractic?” And perhaps even more importantly…”How did it get there?” Questioning what we believe and how we have come to accept that as true, is one of the most powerful steps to gaining complete confidence and clarity of vision both inside and outside of Chiropractic. When you have come to know that Chiropractic is the detection and correction of vertebral subluxation to allow the individual the fullest expression of their innate intelligence, you have come to KNOW Chiropractic. Until then…perhaps you are only believing in it…or as the majority of this profession…not.

We owe it to ourselves, this great profession, and the multitudes of people out there, to continue to dive deeply into our beautiful philosophy, continually refining how we communicate that message effectively to the masses.
